Custom Layout Reseach

In this project case study, I will be sharing my experience supporting user research for customizable dashboard layouts in an enterprise fraud analysis tool.

The goal was to better understand user workflows and help identify opportunities to reduce friction through a personalized, drag-and-drop layout experience.

Process

Tagging Insights from User Sessions

I helped analyze 8 moderated user interviews by tagging needs, pain points, and feature requests in Dovetail. This process helped surface key themes around layout friction and personalization desires, forming the basis for our insight report.

Creating an Actionable Insight Report

I compiled a structured report that clearly separated must-haves from nice-to-haves, using direct user quotes and tagged patterns. After two iterations with feedback from PMs, the final report was used to define roadmap features like template libraries and movable widgets.

Collaborating Across Teams to Drive Decisions

Throughout the project, I worked closely with product managers to clarify research objectives and review findings. The insights I delivered directly informed sprint planning and helped prioritize which layout features would deliver the most user value.

Outcome

The final insight report consolidated themes from eight user interviews and outlined clear product recommendations.

It was shared with PMs to inform sprint planning and is now used as a reference document for shaping the Custom Layouts roadmap.

The project also strengthened my ability to translate qualitative feedback into actionable design priorities.
